Michael Northrup grew up in southeastern Ohio, got a BFA in photo from Ohio University in 1970 and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1980. He studied with Jack Welpott, Judy Dater, Frederick Sommer, and Minor White/MIT. Northrup taught photo from 1980 to 1990 and went commercial in 1991 in Baltimore. He has two books published by J&L Books, Beautiful Ecstasy and Babe, with a third in production. Much of his work is based on the “snapshot aesthetic” with a sprinkling of irony. Northrup started his career using a 4x5 view camera and now uses his smartphone as his main camera.
